People have been staying home, masks have been worn, and about 2.5 million people worldwide have died. What is causing this? SARS-CoV-2, more commonly known as the coronavirus or Covid-19. This virus is a pandemic, and it has been swarming the world for nearly a year now. The US currently has 3 vaccines to protect people from this pandemic because SARS-CoV-2 is a deadly virus. The first case was recorded in China, more specifically the city Wuhan. Rumors say that the virus originated from a seafood market, escaped from a lab, or came from bats, however, there are a few facts gathered about the illness now. After visiting Wuhan, health officials believe that there were cases in other places that weren’t detected before the virus was discovered in China. The officials estimate that it will take years to find the origin of SARS-CoV-2. When the first of Covid-19 hit, many countries went on lockdown including the USA. This damaged the economy severely. Many small businesses struggled, and some shut down to never open again. Covid-19 leaves an impact by leading to the technological advancements that people went through, such as making the vaccine and much more.
First of all, the pandemic has led to the production of a vaccine in a matter of months instead of years. According to Medical News Today, since this virus was in the same family of other viruses we’ve had in the past (SARS and MERS), researchers had a little head start with the vaccine which resulted in faster production. Pfizer was the first company to make a successful vaccine in the US. Some people are hesitant about receiving the vaccine because of how quickly it was made and the safety of it. The Pfizer vaccine needs to be stored in very low temperatures. The efficiency rate of their vaccine is around 95% which is pretty good for a vaccine made in a year. The next vaccine to be approved was the Moderna vaccine. The Moderna vaccine also had to be stored in very cold temperatures. The effectiveness of the Moderna vaccine is 94.5%. The third vaccine approved is the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. It can be stored at refrigerated temperatures. Its effectiveness against Covid-19 is 72%, but this vaccine only requires one dose. Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine require two doses about a month apart. Overall, this pandemic shows vaccine advancements.
In conclusion, Covid-19 is a deadly pandemic that will never be forgotten. This virus has changed the way people live forever. The economy has been damaged, but with 3 vaccines and reopenings, we are starting to heal. In conclusion, we will recover from this pandemic and live our lives like how we used to.
